Although mainstream science has yet to recognize magnet therapy as an effective branch of alternative medicine, an increasingly large number of people are beginning to use it as a supplementary treatment for a variety of health-related conditions. Personal testimonials as to the positive effects of magnet therapy are plenty, attesting to the general satisfaction of its practitioners. Those opposed to magnet therapy often argue that positive results are merely a product of the placebo effect – but to that we say, who cares? If the purpose of a therapy is to relieve the sensation of pain, and the therapy achieves that purpose successfully, then the therapy – placebo or not – is an effective one.

The goal of this article is not to argue the effectiveness of magnet therapy, for that is another matter in itself. Rather, we would like to provide you with an overview of some of the more common uses of magnet therapy, focusing on the use of magnets as a supplementary treatment for pain.

Do note: when we say supplementary, we mean just that. Magnet therapy should not be viewed as a substitute for regular visits to the doctor, recommended surgeries or medications, etc. It is generally in conjunction with conventional treatments that magnet therapy can be at its most effective.

Modern magnet therapy products come in all shapes and sizes, and are made of a variety of materials. Magnetic jewelry is an especially popular accessory, as it affords the wearer a fashionable and discreet means of using magnet therapy. Other magnet therapy products include back and joint supports and magnetic bandages, which are designed to offer more concentrated treatments for pain and discomfort in specific parts of the body; magnetic insoles for shoes; magnetic seat and mattress pads; and a wide variety of other products out there on the market.

Magnet therapy in its various forms has been claimed to produce positive pain relieving effects in the treatment of a great number of conditions, including back and neck pain, arthritis, muscle soreness, carpal tunnel syndrome – and the list goes on and on. NY Times best selling author Gary Null’s Healing with Magnets (1998) contains an extensive review of the various uses of magnet therapy for pain relief and other positive health benefits.

Some people are so firmly convinced by the effectiveness of magnet therapy that they choose it as an alternative to over-the-counter painkillers. One of the advantages of using magnet therapy as an alternative to painkillers is that there appear to be no inherent risks associated with magnet therapy other than the possibility of it being ineffective. Meanwhile, painkillers sometimes have side effects that can result in serious health problems for users. The effectiveness of painkillers is also debatable, as over-the-counter medications are limited in their effectiveness to begin with. Furthermore, users can build up tolerances to drugs they take frequently, rendering them even less effective for pain relief.

To conclude, we state again that magnet therapy is not a proven avenue of medical treatment, but that for many people it does act as an effective supplementary treatment for pain and discomfort. The best way to test it is to try it out for yourself. Magnet therapy products tend to be relatively inexpensive – so get yourself a bracelet and see what you think. If it isn’t doing anything for you, then at least you’ve got a nice new addition to your jewelry collection!

By: Graeme Stuart-Bradshaw

Why Detoxify?

Every day we are exposed to external toxins from our environment and internal toxins produced as the byproduct of our digestive and metabolic processes. Toxic and unwanted inorgranic chemicals are found in our foods, water and air in the form of fertilizers, pesticides, heavy metals and other pollutants. Working in climate controlled environments is a source of airborne microorganisms and debris and home and work environments expose us to paint and carpet fumes. Everything from plastic containers to drycleaned clothes to skin and haircare products and cosmetics bombard our bodies with unwanted pollutants. All of these fall in the category of environmental toxins.

Our bodies also produce unwanted substances as the normal byproduct of our digestion and metabolism. In addition to this, we can accumulate waste products of any infectious microrganisms living in our bodies. If our body has the proper nutrition in sufficient quantities to provide a healthy biochemistry and if the organs of elimination and detoxification are functioning at optimal levels, our body is able to eliminate these unwanted substances safely and efficiently through cellular processes via the main organs of detoxification; skin, bowels, liver, kidneys and lungs. This manifests as elimination through perspiration, bowel elimination, urination and respiration. However, if the body is producing and taking in more toxins than it can safely eliminate, a state of chronic toxicity may occur.

Most chronic illnesses are the result of a combination of factors. The main contributing factors, however, can be attributed to the presence of unwanted substances in the body or the lack of needed substances in the body and, in many cases, a combination of both of these factors. When the body has been overburdened with exogenous (external) and endogenous (internal) toxic substances for a prolonged period of time, it loses its capacity to detoxify at the same rate that toxins are being produced and ingested. It is under these unnatural conditions that we begin to manifest symptoms of being overloaded with toxicity and our organs are weakened. It is thought by many natural health professionals that this prolonged state of toxicity undermines organ and cellular function and is the underlying cause of many chronic diseases.

The presence of unwanted substances in the body is a very common root of illness. The process of eliminating unwanted substances from the body at the cellular level addresses and corrects this imbalance. However, for effective detoxification it is essential to provide the body with the necessary dietary substances so that the body can perform this important and natural function. This is exactly what we will be doing on the program.

“Detoxification” refers to the body’s ability to neutralize and safely eliminate harmful chemicals within the body. The detoxification program is designed to enhance the body’s innate ability to handle toxins. While it is unrealistic and virtually impossible to eliminate external toxins completely, the body can be unburdened and supported in its natural function of detoxification so that it is better able to cope with the daily stresses of modern life and thereby establish a higher level of health.

Detoxification has a beneficial effect on most chronic illnesses because it has an impact on almost all systems of the body: cardiovascular, nervous, immune, respiratory, reproductive, gastrointestinal, urinary, skin, musculoskeletal and endocrine.

Detoxification is recommended for individuals who:

Have chronic headaches

Have chronic skin conditions

Have gallbladder pathology

Stiff, aching joints and muscles

Susceptibility to infections

Respiratory difficulties

Benefits of Detoxification

An insomnia cure. Hmm… Before we go for a cure it may be a good idea to try and know our enemy. What are our signs and symptons. What type of Insomnia do we have. Perhaps a working definition would be helpful.

The experts seem to agree that something along these lines would suit.

“Insomnia” is any episode of unrefreshing sleep, difficulty falling asleep, frequent awakenings, or waking up too early in the morning and not being able to drop back off. Women and the elderly seem to be the most frequent sufferers. We can divide these episodes into three collective groups and label them Short-term Transient or Chronic.

A quick explanation of these three would be as follows;

Transient, a simple disturbance in sleeping patterns. A short illness, a sudden change in lifestyle, stress, isomething that leads to a short term change

Short-term insomnia is is less fun. It lastsfor about 2-3 weeks. Causes could be something like a new job, divorce, serious illness, financial problems, or a family berevement.

Chronic as the name suggests is the real thing. Chronic insomnia is the rarest and most serious type, with Insomnia lasting longer than a few weeks. I’ve just been reading a learned article that says Chronic Insomnia is fairly rare. That may be so but if 10 percent of the US population suffers from it thats over 20 Million people leading a life of misery.

While it would be nice to blame insomnia on things outside our control , many cases of insomnia are self inflicted by such things as caffeine, smoking, poor eating habits, alcohol and lack of exercise.

Caffeine is one the most widely blamed causes of insomnia. An ingredient in coffee, tea, colas, chocolate, and some medications, caffeine is a stimulant . We insomniacs DO NOT NEED stimulants. Quite the reverse. Insomnia solution number one – Cut out the caffine.

Alcohol is often reccomended as a nightcap. Forget it. Thats only beacuse your Doctor drinks it. Alcohol actually lightens and fragments sleep, causing you to wake up as your body metabolizes it. You may think you’re in a deep sleep, but your not getting the deep sleep that Insomniacs need for a cure. Insomnia solution number two – No Alcohol with a couple or four hours of bedtime.

Eating. Yes, I know I can’t ban you from eating but I can jump on the slimmers bandwaggon. Eat a light last meal a couple of hours before going to bed. Avoid spicy and fatty foods that cause indigestion. Lets hear it for MILK. Milk has an amino acid that the body converts to a sleep-enhancing compound in the brain. Calcium is a natural relaxing agent along with several other vitamins such as the B vitamins and magnesium. Have a look at the bottom of the page for details on how to find others. If you get hungry at night, have a light snack before bedtime. Some foods are helpful and actually promote production of melatonin, a hormone associated sleep. Try cheese, soy nuts, chicken, pumpkinseeds, and turkey. High-carbohydrate foods such as bread act upon another hormone, serotonin, which helps to reduce anxiety and contribute toan insomnia solution. Insomnia solution no three. Be careful what you eat.

Nicotine products are universally bad for you. For the Insomniac nicotine has to go. It’s a stimulant that increases blood pressure, speeds up the heart rate, and stimulates brain activity. Insomniacs do not need increased blood pressure, a fast heart rate and a stimulant. Insomnia solution number four. No more ciggies!

Regular exercise is good in fact its excellent, (here comes the but) but, not just before bed. If you work out too close to bedtime, the increase in your heart rate and metabolism will make your body too excitable to sleep. Exercise earlier in the day and give the body a chance to produce that warm rosy glow and relax as the body reacts by producing melatonin to take your temperature down to normal. Exercise for an insomnia solution!

Make your bed as comfortable as possible. Experiment with what works best for you. Choose a position conducive to sleep. If your partner is the source of your insomnia consider a change of rooms for a while. Get rid of the alarm clock . It only acts as a stressful reminder that you aren’t sleeping.

Control the amount of light in your bedroom. Excessive brightness not only affects your eyes, but it also influences the hormone production that helps to establish a healthy sleep cycle. Wear a sleep mask if necessary. Dark is usually good for an insomnia solution.

When it comes to noise, many people find repetitive sounds easier to sleep through than intermittent and abrupt ones. Ear plugs or a continuous background sound such as a fan can help mask disturbing noise (the next- door neighbors barking dog in my case). Consider is a white noise machine.

Control the thermostat. Temperature extremes, whether too hot or too cold, are no fun for the light sleeper. Cool is usually good for an insomnia solution.

Hope some of these help. Drop us a line and let us know,

Sleep well.

Philip

Back pain is one of the leading causes of pain in the world today. It is also one of the easiest injuries to incur. The slightest little twinge can be devastating at the wrong moment. Our backs are incredibly resilient, however, just as the rest of our body is. It will heal itself in time.

The causes of back pain are impossible to list. Common causes, however, are strains, pulls, and twists. Direct injury, bone malformation, nerve compression, and many others are also common causes of back pain. Some of these causes of pain can be prevented, while others like scoliosis is often present at birth.

The best way to prevent this type of pain is to be cautious. Do not throw your body around like a puppet even when playing sports. You must realize the limitations of your body, and stay within them.

Another key to preventing back pain is to stay properly hydrated. Many muscle strains and pulls are due to our muscles or tendons being starved. Well hydrated individuals are far less likely to have any hurting in there back.

If you are moving a heavy object, never pull it. Always push items that are heavy. Also, bend at the knees and keep your back straight when lifting. This is one of the most common ways to injure your back and create problems.

Leave the pumps in the closet. The higher your heels are, the more likely you are going to have back pain. This is a common problem among professional women. Take the time to learn to love regular heeled shoes.

The prevention of back pain is only partially up to you. Some people are born with back problems such as scoliosis. It is vital that you rule out these types of problems before you attempt to work on the back pain. Different problems respond in various ways, and should be diagnosed before therapy is started.

You can create a sense of well-being and invigorate your home with a healthy atmosphere through diffusing essential oils. Choose the oil to diffuse based on your health conditions, mood or the time of the day or year. Diffusing essential oils is a perfect way to help you relieve tension, dispel odors and create an atmosphere of peace and harmony. Relax after a long day’s work with the wonderful scent of an essential oil.

Steam and heat diffusion have been around for millennia. Many native people have used hot rocks from open fires to create a primitive form of steam diffusion. Water that has been boiled or heated can be steeped with herbs or medicinal substances. This therapeutic water can be poured directly on the hot rocks, resulting in steam that can be inhaled for alleviating lung conditions, sinus conditions and other health conditions. The steam can be concentrated by placing a towel over the head of the person using the treatment or trapping the steam in an enclosure such as a sauna.

The lipid-soluble structure of essential oils and the fact that they have a protein-like structure similar to human cells and tissues makes them even more compatible with human tissue. European scientists have found that essential oils can work as natural chelators, bonding to metallic and chemicals ferrying them out of the body.

Diffusing essential oils can help to keep you and your family healthy this winter. When diffused, essential oils have been reported to improve immune health and create a feeling of balance and well-being. Research also shows that diffusion of certain oils may reduce bacteria, fungus and mold in indoor environments. Create a healthy home for your family with essential oils!

In order to create optimal health one must choose optimal healthy foods. Makes sense right? A side note: I didn’t know for the first thirty (30) years of my life. So, what are optimal healthy foods?

Optimal healthy foods from my thirty (30) study of macrobiotics are plant foods that have sustained the continued evolution of animals for over 3.2 billion years culminating in grain. As one of the lines in my limerick says, “Use your brain eat grain.”

Order and structure over billions of years, selecting and eating biologically correct foods have given modern man (an animal) a fantastic, wonderful body and mind. We have to understand this in order to comprehend just what foods are necessary for the continued survival of this beautiful creature we call man and/or woman. The answer is quite simple. GRAIN. Currently grain is the primary food of mankind on this planet and is the food for re-structuring our body and mind. Of course, I’m assuming here that most of us (myself include) have lost our way and cannot understand how our bodies and mind have gone off the track with processed foods, especially white sugar and white flour and white creamy foods like ice cream and dairy and cheese. I’m so grateful for Michio Kushi for bringing this teaching to the United States.

In my way of thinking from the evolution of plant and animals I have discovered that eating everyday a recapitulation of the 3.2 billion year evolution of plants is the food for optimal health. It’s the food mother nature has provided for us. It is very orderly and well structured as one can obviously see in the farmer’s fields: grain, vegetables, beans, seeds and nuts, giving humanity endless sources of food! Contrast that to any man made manufactured or processed food and see chaos and ill-defined structure. Think a twink: lifeless, soft and mushy.

It is well worth repeating: You will achieve optimal health when you learn how to select or choose the foods you need for optimal health. To find out more go to any macrobiotic book, lecture, cooking class or dinner. And one more thing…..HAVE FUN…enjoy the trip to optimal health.
